Even better than the real thing – making books

Bookbinding workshop at Site Gallery Sheffield, UK.

I have a confession to make. I like books. I like books for their own sake. I don’t worry about it, I just love ’em. I like the physicality, the ephemerality, the fetishistic redundant immediacy of them, and the unnecessary luxury of them.

And I don’t worry about it.

I can publish pretty much anything I want, in pretty much any medium I choose, for pretty much zero cost, online, but there is still something fundamentally satisfying about making a big papery thing, tied up with string.

And this is what I did today. As part of the current exhibition and popup bookshop of publications by Coracle Press, and COPY artists’ residency at Site Gallery, Sheffield, UK, I took part in a bookbinding workshop given by Sheffield-based artist Victoria Lucas.
